Want to know more about playas, the benefits they provide, and how to make them work for you? Register now for the 6th Annual Playa Lake Workshop and Tour on January 11 and 12, 2022 in Dodge City, Kansas. The two-day event is free for landowners and tenants with playa lakes on their land and includes lunch both days. For others who would like to attend, there is a $50 fee which also covers lunch. Registration is required.
While the event is designed for landowners and land managers who have playas on their land, it is also open to individuals who are interested in learning more about this unique natural resource and how it can help provide clean water for communities. Participants will learn about playas, the benefits they provide including groundwater recharge and wildlife habitat, how communities can incorporate playa conservation into their water conservation efforts, and the conservation programs available for restoring and conserving playas.
The two-day event will begin on Tuesday, January 11, with a field tour including visits to a few playas that are enrolled in various conservation programs. Attendees will see what playas may look like before, during, and after being accepted into a conservation program and using different management strategies to restore the health of a playa. There will also be opportunities to have open discussions about the pros and cons of each conservation program.
The workshop will continue on Wednesday, January 12, at the USD 443 Admin Building at the Civic Center in Dodge City, where participants will learn about the latest playa research, the importance of playas to people and wildlife, and options to conserve and restore playas. There will also be opportunities for attendees to ask questions of landowners who are participating in conservation programs and local agency staff who can give expert advice about managing playas.
Due to covid-19, social distancing and other precautions will be observed during the field tour and workshop, and there will be virtual conferencing options available as well for those who prefer not to attend in person.
The Playa Lake Workshop and Tour is a multi-partner event, with the following organizations participating on the planning committee: Ducks Unlimited, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands & Streams, Kansas Association of Conservation Districts, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition, Pheasants Forever, Playa Lakes Joint Venture, and Star Seed.
